[新聞]
MIAMI (AFP) - World number two Roger Federer overcame American Andy Roddick in three sets to set up a semi-final clash with Novak Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 hardcourt tournament here.

The second-seeded Swiss, still in search of his first title of 2009, defeated Roddick 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, avenging a quarter-final loss to the American here last year.

In the semi-finals 13-time Grand Slam champion Federer will face third-seeded Serbian Djokovic, who beat 10th-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4.

Federer, who won back-to-back titles here in 2005 and 2006, closed out the match with a service break, earning a match point with a backhand winner that clipped the net cord and found the corner.

Another backhand found Roddick helpess at the net.

"It's easier if I would have just played terrible the whole time," said Roddick, who thrilled the crowd of 14,000 by taking the second set.

But in the hard-fought third, Roddick failed to convert two game points in the final game.

"I at least gave it a go there in the third, and didn't really catch a break there," he said.

Djokovic, who had lost his last four encounters with Tsonga, reversed that trend despite receiving treatment for apparent heat-related symptoms in the second set.

Djokovic broke Tsonga to take a 4-2 lead in the second, saved two break points in the eighth game and was under pressure again as he served for the match at 5-4 but closed out the victory in just under two hours.

Djokovic, who said he had been battling a stomach ailment on Tuesday, said that the after-effects, the heat and the pressure of the match combined to affect him.

But he still displayed precise, powerful groundstrokes that had Tsonga on the defensive from the start.

"I have to be very happy with today's performance, because I have been struggling to find a way to win against him in the last four encounters," he said. "I just knew that I needed to stick in and try to wait for my chances and be aggressive.

"Today I think I tried to be closer to the line, more in control, and just put the pressure on him. So I think that's what I did."

The other men's quarter-finals on Thursday pit world number one Rafael Nadal against sixth-seeded Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro and fourth-seede Briton Andy Murray against Spain's eighth seed Fernando Verdasco.

Nadal, the Australian Open champion, is gunning for his second straight prestigious Masters 1000 title in as many starts after his triumph in Indian Wells, California.

Roddick advances to 4th round at Key Biscayne

By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer 4 hours, 35 minutes ago

Tommy Haas, of Germany, throws his racket after losing a match against Mikhail Kukushkin, of Kazakhstan, in the first round at the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament in Key Biscayne, Fla. Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Kukushkin won 6-4, 6-4.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP)—Andy Roddick missed his chance on Sunday to play Dwyane Wade in H-O-R-S-E.

Roddick was too busy trying to beat Dmitry Tursunov at tennis.

Already off to the fastest start of his career this year, Roddick reached the fourth round at the Sony Ericsson Open by defeating Tursunov 7-6 (9), 6-2.

The match forced the cancellation of plans for Roddick and tennis buddy Mardy Fish to play H-O-R-S-E against Wade on the Miami Heat practice court following their workout Sunday.

“He can have his H-O-R-S-E title for another year,” Roddick said with a smile. “It’s disappointing, and it’s something I really looked forward to.”

His 25th victory this year—most on the ATP Tour—was considerable consolation. It didn’t come easily: The No. 5-seeded Roddick erased two set points in the tiebreaker, one with an ace and the second when Tursunov netted a forehand, and won the final three points in a stressful 75-minute first set.

Roddick lost his temper early in the set when mist fell and umpire Cedric Mourier declined to stop play. After losing his serve, Roddick slammed down his racket, picked it up and threw it again.

“I basically was wondering how many more times we were going to play on a slippery court,” Roddick said. “He said, ‘Well, no one has fallen yet.’ I said, ‘Well, if that’s a barometer, then we have a problem.’ So I feel like my argument was just, but the way I went about it probably wasn’t the best.”

Roddick said he apologized to Mourier after the match.

Downtrodden U.S. tennis fortunes received a surprising boost when qualifier Taylor Dent upset No. 15 Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-3. Dent, ranked 467th, is mounting a comeback from a back injury that plagued him for three years, required two operations and left him in a body cast for months.

“It has been a dream comeback so for me,” said Dent, 27. “It hasn’t been a perfect ride, but the fact that I’m here and still plugging away and fighting hard is a dream come true.”

Only four American men—including Roddick and Dent—and two women—the Williams sisters—remained in the tournament when the third round started Sunday.

Dent next plays No. 2-seeded Roger Federer, who beat Nicolas Kiefer for the 11th consecutive time, 6-4, 6-1. Roddick’s next opponent will be No. 9 Gael Monfils, who rallied from two service breaks down in the final set to beat two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (3).

No. 5 Venus Williams, seeking her fourth Key Biscayne title and her first since 2001, beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-5, 6-3.

There were two upsets on the women’s side, both involving last year’s French Open finalists. No. 7-seeded Ana Ivanovic, the defending Roland Garros champion, lost to No. 25 Agnes Szavay 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. No. 2 Dinara Safina was beaten by unseeded Samantha Stosur 6-1, 6-4.

“I hardly did anything well,” Ivanovic said. “I always was missing by a little bit, and got really down on myself.”

“Just a disaster match,” Safina said. “It was sad the way I played.”

AP - Mar 25, 4:42 pm EDT

That left the women without three of their seven highest-seeded players. No. 3 Jelena Jankovic was eliminated Saturday night by Gisela Dulko.

Roddick missed many chances in the first set to make his match shorter. With the No. 25-seeded Tursunov serving at 5-all, Roddick failed to convert five break-point chances and finally sailed a forehand long to lose the 22-point game. He also was unable to convert his first three set points in the tiebreaker.

Roddick said gusty wind and high humidity made conditions difficult, so he was content to keep the ball in play and wear Tursunov down with a series of long rallies.

“It’s like a swamp out there today,” Roddick said. “You’re sweating a ton. I mean, you can wring out your shorts afterward. So I wanted to be sure to take advantage of that and make the points tough.”

The match started at 11 a.m., and Roddick said he didn’t know until afterward that his agent and trainer had scrubbed the H-O-R-S-E showdown because they feared he might be late.

“They said they had to make a call this morning,” Roddick said. “Obviously Dwyane wasn’t waiting around all day, and so my agent erred on the side of not making Mr. Wade wait.”

Roddick, who often disparages his basketball skills, said Wade is his favorite athlete. Rescheduling their game wasn’t an option because the Heat play at home Monday, then have a three-game trip starting at Dallas.

Said Roddick: “I don’t know if I provide the necessary warmup for the Mavericks.”

[新聞]Nadal Ousts American Title Hope Roddick

[來源]
Nadal Ousts American Title Hope Roddick

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal extinguished American title hopes at the BNP Paribas Open as he dismissed Andy Roddick, 6-4, 7-6(4) in semifinal action, Saturday in Indian Wells. The Spaniard will face Andy Murray in the final after the 21-year-old Scot ousted three-time champion Roger Federer 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 earlier in the day.
Roddick had come into his semifinal match riding an 11-match winning streak, but could not figure out a way to get past the ATP World Tour Champion. He was broken in the seventh game of the opening set, and then spent the second set playing catch-up after the Spaniard twice went ahead a break of serve.

Nadal assumed a 5-3 lead after Roddick failed to convert his two break point chances in the eighth game, but then failed to close out the match in his next service game. He succeeded in putting away the victory in the tie-break, setting up match point with an ace and then seeing Roddick’s return fly wide.

“At 6-5, I started again to play a little bit more aggressive,” said Nadal. “I served a little bit more direction, so in the tie-break I did the same, having good points. That was important to keep that mentally after two times losing the serve.”

It marked the second time that Nadal had beaten Roddick in the Indian Wells semifinals. Two years ago, he defeated the American in straight sets before going on to defeat Novak Djokovic for the title.

The 22-year-old Mallorcan will be playing in his third ATP World Tour final this season, and his 42nd overall (32-9 record). He prevailed over Federer in a five-set classic at the Australian Open, and then finished runner-up to Murray at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Rotterdam last month after injuring his right knee in the second set of the final.

Nadal, who has held down the World No. 1 ranking for 31 consecutive weeks since overtaking Federer at the top spot last August, is chasing his 13th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. He stands behind Andre Agassi and Federer on the list of Masters 1000 title leaders, who have respectively won 17 and 14 titles at the premier tier on the ATP World Tour.

Nadal has a 5-2 record against Murray, but has lost their past two meetings. The two players rank fourth on the list of ATP match wins leaders this season, with records of 20-2 and 20-1 respectively, trailing just Roddick, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tommy Robredo.

“He's very complete player,” said Nadal about Murray. “He has a good serve, has very good control from the baseline, everything. He has good hands, very good drop shot, so he can play aggressive, he can play defensive. He's a very complete player.”

The 26-year-old Roddick was looking to become the third American player in the past four years to reach the Indian Wells final. James Blake had finished runner-up to Federer in 2006 and Mardy Fish to Djokovic last year.

Roddick teamed up with Fish following his semifinal match to clinch the BNP Paribas Open doubles title, saving three match points in their 3-6, 6-1, 14-12 win over defending doubles champion Andy Ram and partner Max Mirnyi.

[新聞]Fish/Roddick Save 3 M.P. To Win Doubles Title

今天有兩則新聞
一個很高興 一個有點sad....
Happy News~
[來源]
a0056352_14572874.jpgAmericans Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick clinched the doubles title at the BNP Paribas Open after saving three match points in a 3-6, 6-1, 14-12 win over defending champion Andy Ram and partner Max Mirnyi on Saturday in Indian Wells.
Fish and Roddick sent the doubles final into a Match Tie-break after winning the final five games of the second set, and saved match points at 8-9, 9-10 and 11-12 in the decider to the approval of the home crowd.

“We were excited,” said Fish, who jumped on Roddick’s back in celebration following the match. <--看的出來很開心!我要去找圖“We were fired up. It was an unbelievable atmosphere. Even those guys I'm sure had fun. It was a great match, 14-12 in the third.”

Roddick, who lost to Rafael Nadal<--這樣強調很心碎耶! in the singles semifinal prior to the doubles match, said: “I'd like to sit here and talk about my doubles prowess, but about 1-all in the second set, Mardy pretty much took over that match. In the breaker, I didn't do much to help us. I double faulted twice, which was ridiculous. I'm just glad he was able to step up and be clutch.”<-~~恩~~該說還有點自責?don't mind!贏了就好>"< 我想魚先生不會在意的(因為是贏的.輸了我有很難說了)
Fish and Roddick improved to a 13-4 record as a tandem with their second ATP World Tour title. They won on their tour debut in 2002 at Houston.

Roddick clinched his fourth doubles title and his first since 2006 at Indianapolis (w/Reynolds). Fish, the singles runner-up last year in Indian Wells, had won his fifth ATP World Tour doubles title last month in Memphis (w/Knowles). <--我都不知道魚先生的雙打好像還不賴耶!!!

Mirnyi and Ram, who made a successful debut together last October with the Vienna title, had upset the World No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan 6-2, 6-4 in Friday’s semifinal.

It marked Mirnyi’s second runner-up finish at the BNP Paribas Open, having come up just shy of the title in 2002 (w/Federer). Ram was playing in his third straight BNP Paribas Open final. He and compatriot Jonathan Erlich won the title last year (d. Nestor-Zimonjic) after losing to Martin Damm and Leander Paes in the 2007 final. Erlich has been sidelined since the US Open with an elbow injury.

Nadal, Roddick win to set up semifinals match

By KEN PETERS, AP Sports Writer 9 minutes ago

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP)—No. 7 Andy Roddick beat defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2 Friday and will face No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open.

Nadal, trying for his second Indian Wells title in three years, rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

No. 2 Roger Federer, who won the title three consecutive years beginning in 2004, faces No. 4 Andy Murray on Saturday in the other semifinal.

On the women’s side, defending champion Ana Ivanovic and Vera Zvonareva earned spots in Sunday’s final. Ivanovic defeated upset-minded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-3. Zvonareva beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-3.

Roddick’s game was solid all-around against No. 3 Djokovic. The error-prone Serbian made 30 unforced errors, 18 more than his American opponent.

“I don’t think he had his best day, by any means,” Roddick said. “I mixed up the paces pretty well. I hit my forehand when I had to. The chip was a pretty good neutralizing shot for me.

“I was hitting it pretty firm, and I didn’t really miss any returns. I think that’s a big thing for me.”

Djokovic was frustrated with his shoddy play.

“It’s just one of the days when you really don’t feel comfortable on the court,” he said. “I just didn’t have any momentum—no feel for the ball, no movement. Just no solutions. It was all me making an incredible amount of unforced errors.

“This was one of the worst matches, certainly, I played.”

Roddick shortly afterward played doubles with partner Mardy Fish. They defeated Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 7-6(4) to earn a spot in the final.

The singles semifinals appearance will be Roddick’s third at Indian Wells. He lost to Lleyton Hewitt in 2005 and to Nadal in 2007.

Nadal covered the court extremely well in his win over del Potro, keeping the ball in play even when the Argentine had him racing from side to side. Often, Nadal would be on the run and slash a winner crosscourt or down the line. He hit 25 winners, 13 with his forehand.

Nadal, who has won four of six career meetings against Roddick, figures he’s in for a difficult test in their semifinal.

“He’s playing very well. He started the season very well, semifinals in Australia. He played the final in Doha, too, and he won in Memphis,” Nadal said. “It’s going to be a really tough match. I have to play very well, serve well and focus all the time, play aggressive on the return.”

Nadal, who supplanted longtime No. 1 Federer at the top of the rankings last year, is playing in the desert tournament for the fifth time. He has made it at least to the semifinals each of the past four years and took the title in 2007 with a win over Djokovic.

No. 7 Ivanovic, a 21-year-old Serb, dominated the 17-year-old schoolgirl from Moscow, who had upset No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and No. 10 Agnieszka Radwanska on the way to her first tour semifinal. Pavlyuchenkova came into the desert tournament ranked No. 42.

“I was really happy with my performance,” Ivanovic said. “She’s not an easy opponent; she doesn’t give you much rhythm. Going into the match, I didn’t know anything about her. I just tried to play my game and be aggressive on her serve.”

She believes Pavlyuchenkova has a bright future.

“She can be very dangerous. She had a great run this week, beating top 10 players,” Ivanovic said. “That’s very good and should give her a lot of confidence.”

The reigning French Open champion who held the No. 1 spot at two different times last year, Ivanovic is going for her ninth tour title.

Zvonareva and Azarenka will be on the same side Saturday in a title match, meeting Gisela Dulko and Shahar Peer in the doubles final.

“We’ve been playing pretty good here,” Zvonareva said. “She’s a very nice girl and good partner, so I’m enjoying it. Then I will have to come back for my singles (on Sunday), which I’m very excited about.”

Meanwhile, Azarenka was not so happy after her lopsided loss in singles.

“I didn’t do even 10 percent of my game today. It was a wasted match,” Azarenka said.

No. 6 Zvonareva, a 24-year-old from Moscow, made it to the championship for the first time in five appearances at Indian Wells. She previously had advanced as far as the quarterfinals in the event three times, including last year when she lost to eventual champion Ana Ivanovic.

“It’s my first finals here and it’s a big event, great tournament, and I’m really happy about it,” Zvonareva said.

The 19-year-old Azarenka, from Belarus, lost for only the second time in 19 matches this year. Zvonareva improved to an identical 17-2.
